The area around Sella was
recently described in a travel magazine as one of the most beautiful areas
in Europe.
The mountains and
valleys of Sella are perfect for walking, biking and rock climbing, and due
to the mild climate, these sports are practised all year round. As Sella is
very near to the coast, it is possible to combine a nature holiday with the
beach and there are plenty of interesting places to visit within easy reach.
Beaches
The Costa Blanca beaches
are famous for the purity and clarity of the sea. The nearest beaches are:
Villajoyosa
At 18km from Sella,
Villajoyosa has a lovely central beach as well as several smaller, quieter
beaches such as Paraiso, Bou Nou, Torres and Caleta.
La
Cala de Finestrat
This is a small and
popular resort with a lovely sandy cove and plenty of bars and restaurants.
Benidorm
Everyone has heard of
Benidorm! It is a large and busy resort with two huge beaches; Poniente and
Levante. If it’s nightlife your after, this is the place for you! The old
town is charming and definitely worth a visit.
Places of Interest
Safari
Park Aitana
The Safari Park is
situated beyond Sella high in the Aitana Sierra,
1020 m/3346ft above sea
level and has stunning views. It houses a large variety of animals in their
natural habitat. There is a bar/restaurant serving local regional dishes.
We advise you to arrive for 11.00am to catch the guided tour, which follows
the food wagon around the park.
Guadalest
This is a truly stunning
ancient Moorish fortress town situated in the mountains behind Benidorm.
Totally impenetrable, the only way to expel the Moors was to starve them
out!
Fonts
D’Algar
These are numerous small
springs, which converge to form the beautiful waterfall and lagoons of the
Fonts D’Algar. There are many different paths to explore and the natural
lagoons are a great alternative to the beach. During the hot summer months
they are cool and refreshing (approx 18º). There is a bar and restaurant on
site. It is particularly beautiful in May/June when the oleanders are in
full bloom.
Les Murtes, Donkey Stud Farm / Sanctuary, Jalon
Les Murtes was founded in 1993 by Edith and Alex Aretz
in an effort to save the Spanish donkey from dying out when they realised
that it was becoming an endangered species not just in Jalon but all over
Spain. Starting with two mares, Sarah and Bonny, it is now reckoned to be
one of the largest donkey studs in the country. The small restaurant La
cantina is open for lunch at weekends (booking required) Set amidst lovely
scenery, this makes for an unforgettable experience not least because your
visit will support these wonderful creatures and their preservation here in
Spain.
