Via Ferrata:
The Vertical Footpath
Via Ferrata, meaning “iron road or way” in Italian, was conceived
during World War 1, when Italian and Austrian forces were engaged in
ferocious battles and competed to protect their respective frontiers
in and around the mountainous Dolomite region. To assist troop
movements at high altitudes the forces fixed ladders, hand rails, iron
staples and wires which enabled the soldiers to gain control of the
peaks.
Modern day Via Ferrata has become a popular sport which follows the
original concept but new routes have been devised with safety in mind
and offers the opportunity to explore lesser known mountains trails.
Anyone, not just experienced climbers, can enjoy the thrill of the
rock face but, you need to have a head for heights, be reasonably fit,
and have an appetite for adventure! The Via Ferrata at Ponoig is
certainly the most “athletic” of those in the Valencian region and one
of the most impressive in Spain and, it’s only a 20 min drive from our
base at Casa Blava in Sella! During the
climb, you’ll have the opportunity to stop for photos, enjoy the
awesome views of the coast with the Bernia ridge in the distance and
also have the opportunity to learn from José, your local English
speaking guide, more about the local culture, environment and history
of this valley. |
